The goal of the Panda update was to prevent users from being taken to sites that were not what they were expecting. This change could impact many who used other sites, commonly called content farms, to help push traffic to their site. The theory is that these sites provide relevant text without adding to the user experience.

Google used many tools in making sure that this algorithm proved to be accurate including comparing results to the data of users that blocked sites through a chrome extension. Users were able to block sites that they found irrelevant to their search through this extension as well as through the search engine results for a few months. The data was compared to see if the algorithm provided the same sites that users were blocking. They wanted to make sure that the pages they were targeting were on par with what users found to be inadequate results.

The ultimate idea is for the quality of search results to be high. Rather than having users sent to pages that are considered low quality and that do not meet their needs, they wanted to provide the best quality sites that were most likely to satisfy a customer’s search.

Site owners can avoid being labeled a low quality site by making a few simple changes. They can make certain that their site is user friendly and easy to navigate. They can provide original content. Most importantly, site owners can ensure that their page meets the needs of the user being targeted. Eliminating their link with low quality sites will also help them improve their ranking.

It was never intended for high quality sites to be affected by the Panda update. It was strictly a means for Google to ensure that users continued to find their search results adequate and continued to use them as a search engine.

Is Your Site Susceptible to Panda?

After the Panda update everyone is concerned about whether or not their site is going to be affected. The target was those sites that are considered low quality and that do not provide adequate content for the search result. The question is how do you know if your site qualifies? There are a few ways you can know if your site is considered low quality.

Your content will say a lot about your site. It is more than just the words you put on the page. If you have a lot of duplication in your site and very little original content then chances are your site is considered low quality. You want to make sure that your percentage of original content is high. But that isn’t all.

You also want to steer clear of overusing SEO. Even though it is the rage right now to optimize your page, overuse of words in a way that does not make sense will degrade the quality of your content. In addition you want to be sure that what is on your page matches what the user was looking for. The biggest factor in whether you are high quality or low quality is your content.

It is also important to note some other factors. You want to make sure the ads on your page are appropriate for the search results that led the user there. This can play against you if they are not. You can also enhance your quality by having links on other reputable sites and social media outlets. Another thing that can affect you is the time your visitors actually spend on your site.

All of these factors are used by Google to determine whether your site is high quality or one of the many low quality sites they are trying to prevent from being ranked high. Working on these things will ensure you receive a higher rank and more users find your site.
